I read on the AP wire today that David Carradine, the start of the old Kung Fu TV series, was found dead in a Bangkok, Thailand hotel room, where he was filming his next movie.
I remember watching him quietly and gracefully kick the snot out of old west bad guys in that TV show, and then manage to look confused when those he saved offered their thanks. Caine always did the right thing, for the right reasons, and never expected anything in return.
Recently Mr. Carradine did a yellow pages commercial that was a bit of a take-off on the Kung Fu master theme, and when I saw that, I thought he must have a great sense of humor to pull that off and keep a straight face.
Mr. Carradine was one of those actors whose face gained character as he grew older. Much as Sean Connery became more interesting with age, so did David Carradine.
Today, he’s gone. After episode upon episode of trying to grab the pebbles from the master’s hand, Caine finally made it out of the Shaolin temple, and out into the world. He’s now passed from this world into the next. No more pebbles to grab, no more marks to hit, no more cues to take.
Farewell, Grasshopper.
