Caine Is Gone

Thursday, 04 June 2009 00:00

I read on the AP wire today that David Carradine, the start of the old Kung Fu TV series, was found dead in a Bangkok, Thailand hotel room, where he was filming his next movie.

I remember watching him quietly and gracefully kick the snot out of old west bad guys in that TV show, and then manage to look confused when those he saved offered their thanks. Caine always did the right thing, for the right reasons, and never expected anything in return.

Time for A Change (Again)

Starkville has just elected a new mayor.  Parker Wiseman, 28 years old,  will be the mayor for the next four years, and we’ll see if his plan for “change” really brings the changes we need, or if it’s just more campaign rhetoric said to get him elected.

An April 24, 2009 MSU Reflector article quoted Wiseman  as saying he wanted to be a “candidate for change” and that Starkville needs to “change” it’s economic focus.   Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a non-incumbent candidate speak without claiming that “change” was needed.

Our last election, the most significant change we had was who was sitting in the mayor’s chair.

I believe I recall our current mayor talking about the need for a change, especially building a new Justice Complex,  back when he ran for office four years ago. On that front, there’s been no change.  Today, the much-needed Justice Complex is still little more than just a topic for discussion.

Flight Statistics vs. The TEEFW Ratio

When I was a small boy, the idea of flying intrigued me, but I got over it.

My father was a B-17 pilot during WWII, so I assume at one point in his life, flying held his interest, too.  After 35 missions over enemy territory in Europe, being shot up by flak, belly-sliding a bomber onto an airfield with no operational landing gear, and outliving his air-life expectancy by at least ten missions, my dad never again set foot in a plane.

Smart move on his part, I think. I was able to get over my interest in flying when I realized how inherently dangerous flying was.
